Fully Hand-Tied

Unlike fronting that modifies a commercial wig, Fully Hand-Tied wigs are a complete build. Color, texture, length, actor, house size, time and budget are all factors to be considered.

This is a wig I had to make quickly. I went with a pre-made foundation and then a combination of sewing wefts and ventilating to save time. I knew the style was going to have a center parts and braids on either side, so I wanted to ventilate where the part would be, and other exposed areas such as the nape. I was able to complete this wig in less than 20 hours. If time and budget are concerns, but you still need something to look natural, this is the way to go.

I started with a pre-made foundation purchased at Sally Beauty Salon...but it needed some alterations I split the middle and added a panel of vegetable net down the center, as well as at the bottom to give length and width that specifically matched the actor's head tracing.

I stitched different variations of blonde wefting up the back, leaving the center open. I ventilated the front on the cross grain, meaning that the direction of the hair went back at a diagonal. Since this was all going to be parted down the center, I criss-crossed ventilated up the center of the back. I continued to criss-cross ventilate the center part of the wig in the front and I also ventilated around the nape on the panel that I added until voila! The wig was finished!

A ¾ wig, also known as a fall, is attached like a wig but it begins behind the hairline with the actor's own hair pulled over the seam. This helps to create length and save the actor's hair from the damage of styling it for 8-10 shows a week. Robin Pearson Rose wore a 3/4 wig for Vincent in Brixton.
